GEN Z’S JOURNEY THROUGH ADHD, ANXIETY, AND DEPRESSION

Welcome to the chaos of Gen Z, where memes are the language, and mental health is the rollercoaster they never bought tickets for. If you’re not sure what all the fuss is about, let me take you on a tour through the perplexing landscape of a generational psyche.

The Cross-Generational Conundrum

Older generations observe Gen Z with a mix of bemusement and concern. They’re not just puzzling; They’re a total wild card. The way they work, communicate, and even their understanding of success leaves many scratching their heads. The generational gap isn’t a canyon; it’s an intergalactic expanse.

An Inherited World Of Problems

Gen Z inherited a world in the midst of an identity crisis, grappling with climate change, political upheaval, and the ever-expanding digital universe. Our collective journey into capitalism and ravaging a finite amount of earthly resources in the never ending quest to consume more, has left us at a point in history never seen before. Gone are the days of a job for life and the traditional dream. The truth is if the world continues to consume in the way it has for the last 150 years, there won’t be a world left to live on. That’s a heavy weight for a generation to bear. Imagine stepping into adulthood with the monumental task of solving issues you didn’t create. Their adulthood involves not just self-discovery but also the responsibility of healing a world in need. When you think about it from their perspective, you can see why the same things that mattered to older generations, just don’t mean the same things to them.

Workplace Woes

“Why can’t they commit to a stable job?” the older generations wonder. The answer lies in the desire for a sense of purpose beyond a paycheck. Traditional career paths and corner offices may have once symbolised success, but Gen Z are rewriting the narrative. Remote work, gig economy gigs, and a quest for meaningful endeavours define their professional landscape. That as well as being truly invested in creating a future that’s different from the one that already took us to a severely damaged earth, means how they think about their professional futures is just different.

Beyond that, they’re also waking up to the fact that 9 – 5 culture isn’t actually fair or equitable. Working all day to make other people rich and never receiving a return in that energy is not something Gen Z are striving for. They are prepared to be the generation that says NO instead of working their ass off for a company that they end up hating for years and become bitter and resentful about. But the truth is that a new version of society doesn’t exist yet, and they’re going to have a big hand in creating it. Another overwhelming improvement project looming over a young generation.

Education Evolution

Following a predetermined path into a secure job where you earn enough to thrive in rising costs of living are days of the past. Inflation, house prices and the cost of higher education have gradually made job security and getting on the property ladder unachievable at worst and difficult at best. The whole vision of the white picket life kind of falls to pieces if you can’t afford the house. All of this has seen a gradual decline in people opting to go into higher education. Most of the time it means debt, without the guaranteed job to pay it off. With all of these changes in society and no new way already defined, Gen Z are at the forefront of change and doing things differently without anyone to guide the way.

The Rise of Suicide and the Struggle for Mental Well-Being

The pressure of the huge world issues have seen suicide rates skyrocketing in this age group, a harsh reality that paints a poignant picture. The rise of the digital age, increased screen time, less connection with nature and the accessibility of information about hard to process subjects means the struggle for mental well-being is real. Yet, within this struggle lies the potential for their strength and resilience.

Compassion, Empathy, and Inclusion: Our Generational Superpowers

Now, here’s the revelation: Gen Z possesses superpowers that surpass any cape-clad hero. Compassion, empathy, and inclusion are their weapons of choice. They don’t just talk about change; they embody it. Their capacity to understand and embrace diversity makes them the torchbearers for a more inclusive future. They’re committed to rewriting the mistakes of generations that have gone before them in a way that no other generation ever has.

Agents of Change: The Hopeful Horizon

Instead of viewing them as a generation lost in the labyrinth of problems, see them as agents of change. They’re not just carrying a torch; They’re igniting a beacon of hope that will pave the way to a new future, new technologies and a new way of living on our planet. The battles they fight are preparing them to face the external challenges with courage and resilience.

Understanding Gen Z: A Call for Compassion

To those who may not understand the complexities of Gen Z, extend a hand of compassion. Their journey involves navigating through uncharted territory, fixing huge systemic world issues they didn’t cause and guiding themselves (and the rest of us) back to our humanity, and our connection with each other and the world that we live in. The best you can do is open your mind to why the world has to change and accept that Gen Z are going to be the ones to do it.
